The traditional Chilam Joshi festival has officially commenced in the Kalash Valley of Lower Chitral district, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and will continue from May 13 to May 17, drawing both local and international tourists to the region’s vibrant cultural landscape.
According to Assistant Director of the Tourism Authority, Muhammad Saad, the festival holds deep cultural and religious significance for the indigenous Kalash community and reflects centuries-old traditions that are still actively preserved today.
On the opening day, the ritual known as “Chirik Pipi” was performed in Rumbur Valley. This traditional ceremony involves the symbolic drinking and distribution of milk, representing purity, unity, and communal harmony among participants.
Throughout the festival, several cultural practices are being observed across the three valleys of the Kalash region. These include the decoration of cattle sheds with wildflowers and walnut leaves, as well as the collective distribution of milk, cheese, and yogurt by men and women—symbolizing love, equality, and social cohesion.
One of the highlights of the celebration is the sharing of traditional walnut-based bread, along with folk dances performed to the rhythmic beats of indigenous drums, showcasing the rich musical and culinary heritage of the Kalash people.
A large number of tourists have gathered in the region to witness the colorful festivities, which span across Kalash Valley. The festival is set to conclude on its final day in Bamburet Valley, marking the end of one of the most significant cultural events in the region.
