Bangladesh election results 2026 show the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) winning a decisive two-thirds majority in the February 12 parliamentary polls. Tarique Rahman led BNP to its biggest victory in decades. This marks the first election since the 2024 uprising that removed Sheikh Hasina. Counting confirmed the trend early on February 13.
The results roll in from Dhaka on February 13, 2026. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed a landslide victory in the Bangladesh elections 2026.
The BNP secured at least 209–212 seats out of 299 declared in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad. Domestic TV channels and international reports confirmed the numbers. This gives BNP and its allies a clear two-thirds majority.
Tarique Rahman, First Male PM in 35 Years
Tarique Rahman, the BNP Bangladesh leader, won both his contested seats — Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6. He returned from 17–18 years in exile in London only in December 2025. Now he stands positioned to take the oath as the prime minister. Many expect him to become Bangladesh’s first male PM in 35 years.
The main opposition alliance, led by Jamaat-e-Islami, took around 61–70 seats. Other independents and smaller parties filled the remaining positions.
Voters turned out at over 42,000 polling stations. More than 127 million people were registered. Polls opened at 7:30 AM and closed at 4:30 PM on February 12. The process stayed largely peaceful.
This vote came after the 2024 student-led uprising forced Sheikh Hasina to leave power. Her Awami League faced suspension and could not contest. The interim government under Muhammad Yunus organized the election.
BNP returns to power after more than two decades. Its last major win came in 2001. The party campaigned on restoring stability, fighting corruption, and delivering economic recovery.
Constitutional Reforms and International Reaction
The Bangladesh elections 2026 results also validated a major reform package. Early data from the simultaneous referendum indicates over 60% approval for the “July National Charter.” These reforms include:
- A 10-year limit (two terms) on the Prime Minister’s tenure.
- The reinstatement of the Caretaker Government system for future polls.
- Increased independence for the judiciary.

World leaders, including Indian PM Narendra Modi and Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif, have already extended congratulations. They expressed readiness to work with the new government to ensure regional stability and economic growth.
