The deterioration of the Nazimabad underpass is evident as the plaster on the protective walls has completely worn off, revealing exposed steel reinforcements (rebar) that have started to come loose. This situation is alarming as the falling plaster and exposed rebar can cause severe damage to passing vehicles and potentially lead to fatal accidents if not addressed immediately.
Local residents are urging the authorities for prompt repairs to prevent any tragic incidents. They highlight the urgency, recalling an incident from last year when a signboard fell from the same underpass walls, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to two others.
In a report presented to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab by the DG Technical Services, it was revealed that drug addicts had cut the rebar of the underpass, leading to the previous accident. The report further mentioned that these individuals have also stolen water drainage motors from various underpasses in the city, exacerbating the structural integrity issues.
In response, Mayor Murtaza Wahab has instructed KMC officers and staff to take stringent actions against those responsible for vandalizing the infrastructure. The mayor emphasized the need for immediate repairs and increased security measures to prevent further damage.
