Sindh Minister Suggests Permanent Birth Control After Third C-Section

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho has recommended that women undergoing a third C-section should be offered tubal ligation (TL) as a permanent family planning option. She said the measure could help reduce maternal mortality and improve maternal healthcare across Sindh.

Speaking at the Fourth International Family Planning Summit in Karachi, Dr Pechuho said the increasing number of Caesarean section deliveries was contributing to a rise in maternal deaths in the province. She added that the Sindh government was taking steps to address the issue and improve healthcare services for mothers.

According to the minister, women scheduled for a third C-section should receive proper counselling about tubal ligation so they can make an informed decision regarding permanent contraception. She stressed that family planning plays an important role in protecting the health of both mothers and children.

The summit was jointly organised by Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) under the theme “Youth, Family Planning and Digital Innovation.” It brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers to discuss challenges related to maternal and child health in Pakistan.

Dr Pechuho also highlighted several government initiatives to improve maternal healthcare. These include converting dispensaries into birthing stations, training community midwives to provide safe home-based maternity care, strengthening ambulance services for emergency pregnancy cases, and improving the supply of medicines and medical equipment at primary healthcare facilities.

Health experts at the summit warned that one woman dies every 45 minutes in Pakistan due to pregnancy-related complications, highlighting the urgent need to expand access to quality maternal healthcare and family planning services. They said improving healthcare facilities, promoting awareness, and ensuring timely medical care could help reduce preventable maternal deaths across the country.
