Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen only under its own administration and sovereignty, rejecting what it described as pressure and threats from the United States.
Speaking on the issue, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf indicated that the strategic waterway would remain closed due to threats by the United States. Instead, he stressed that any decision regarding the Strait of Hormuz would be made solely by Iran in line with its sovereign authority.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has warned the US about its recent strikes, along with US pressure over the Strait of Hormuz, saying it would only open through “Iranian arrangements”, not “American threats.”
His comments coincide with growing tensions with Iran and the U.S. over recent military activity in the area.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said U.S. military action had been conducted in response to attacks against commercial ships that the U.S. blamed on Iran. Trump also threatened Tehran against any additional move, pointing out that if it did then a more “robust” response would be executed.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest oil shipping lanes and a large proportion of the world’s crude oil exports cross the narrow strait daily. The uncertainty or disruption of the strait can affect world energy markets and oil prices.
Iran’s new announcement points to Tehran’s desire to retain complete authority over the strategic transit, reiterating a stance that foreign pressure will have no impact on its sovereignty.
The exchange of statements between Iran and the United States is evidence of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, where the events surrounding the Strait of Hormuz are closely followed by the global markets and the international community.
