A proposal to feature former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Pakistan’s Rs5,000 currency note alongside Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah has triggered a heated political and public debate after being raised in the Punjab Assembly.
On Saturday, PML-N lawmaker Arshad Malik proposed adding the portrait of Nawaz Sharif to the highest denomination currency note, saying that the portrait would honour his “contributions to Pakistan’s development and progress” as Prime Minister.
The lawmaker said Nawaz Sharif had made a great contribution in strengthening country’s infrastructure, economic growth and national development and he should be recognised at a national symbolic level.
The suggestion instantly set off a debate in the political arena, with opponents asking why any political leader other than Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah should be put on Pakistan currency. Some critics explained that the national currency should be kept for the basic figures only, while others saw it as a symbolic recognition of the political leadership in the modern era.
Within no time, this issue spread to social media platforms, with varying opinions on the political legacy, national identity, and symbolism of state institutions.
The proposal has not been made official by authorities, and it is still a political measure, not a policy initiative.
