The Government of Punjab has decided to include 50,000 more beneficiaries in the Punjab Ration Card Scheme 2026. The move was made at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which discussed enhancing financial assistance for poor families.

The new initiative seeks to extend the social safety net to those living below the poverty line in Punjab. According to sources, over 1.6 million beneficiaries have already received support through various welfare schemes such as the ration card, Himmat Card and Minority Card.
The Punjab Ration Card Scheme 2026 will continue to provide monthly financial aid to more than 1.4 million people this fiscal year, and another 200,000 beneficiaries will be supported through the Himmat Card program. The approval of 50,000 new beneficiaries is set to enhance social protection measures in the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed during the meeting that the government is committed to prioritising the welfare of the people. She reaffirmed the government’s intention to help the poor through social safety net programs.
Key directives issued in the meeting included:
- Establishment of formal orphanages for abandoned children
- Collaboration with credible NGOs for women and child welfare
- Maintenance and cleaning services for wheelchairs and assistive devices
- Revamping Sanatzar centers with private sector involvement
- Digitalization of medicine distribution through Zakat funds
Strengthening Social Welfare Infrastructure
The Chief Minister also outlined the digitalisation of the Social Welfare Department to make it more responsive and efficient – similar to those in advanced economies. This is likely to enhance efficiency and transparency in social welfare schemes.
