Legislation announced to ban sales of electric vehicles by 2035
Cheyenne: The US state of Wyoming is moving to introduce legislation to ban the sale of new electric vehicles by 2035 to ensure the sustainability of its oil and gas industry.
Wyoming's announcement comes as several states, including New York, California and Oregon, are moving to phase out sales of conventionally fueled vehicles to combat climate change.
Wyoming officials say the oil and gas sector employs countless people and has been a major revenue contributor throughout Wyoming's history.
The bill also clarifies that Wyoming has a low number of charging stations and that the main metal used in electric batteries cannot be easily recycled or scrapped.
The proposed legislation was introduced by a group of lawmakers led by Senator Jim Anderson.
In 2021, Wyoming was the eighth largest oil producer in the United States, producing 85.4 million barrels of oil.
Currently, more than 100 companies are working in the state and more than 68 thousand people are employed in this industry.
